Week 9: Podcasts, Video & Downloadable Audio

I have experience with the YouTube site. I feel this site has good resources, but it is very busy and you must search through inappropriate clips and silly postings in order to find the information. The categories help to organize the search. This exercise came at a good time since I had to locate a video for my daughter's pageant. During oritention the group was taught a dance in one hour. The directors videotape the practice and posted the dance on YouTube for the contestants to view and perfect the opening routine (My daughter is the little one in the wild print dress, Miss Appalachia Outstanding Teen 2009). This was done to eliminate meetings that contestants would have attended, living throughout the state of Maryland. YouTube could be used in the library by creating a library tour of the facilites, booktalks, motivator for lessons, etc. Kids spend many hours viewing the videos.

For some reason, the Podcast exercise was my most difficult. I had trouble with the links and (maybe it was my computer) could not get the selected podcasts to play. Finally, after several days and attempts, I added the RSS feed to my Boglines for the podcast LibVibe. It is short news clips of activities happening in libraries. Podcasts are a hot topic currently for students and this is definitely something I must continue learning about in order to keep up with the tech-no-hows!

Searching titles through the OverDrive account with the Allegany County Public Library System was worth it! Many readings expected in the Advance Placement courses in the high schools can be found, such as Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Great Expectations. This would be a great resource for the AP teachers to promote with their students to support their summer reading assignments.
